You Are What You Eat: March 7 through March 13

Mar 13, 2019 22:07

This past week had new recipes, new restaurants, and other delicious things.

Thursday, March 7 - M loves green beans, so this new recipe Sautéed Green Beans with Tomatoes, Mushrooms & Garlic from the March 2019 Eating Well was a no brainer. We both liked it, although I think I prefer the Green Beans with Tomato Curry I've made in the past as far as green bean / tomato combos go.

Friday, March 8 - Harlow's is a pizza joint that opened a little over a year ago about two blocks from my house. We had been saving it for a night M wanted pizza, so when that arrived we walked over. I had a very nice cocktail with watermelon juice and tequila, and then we split a Leonardo, which was a vegetarian pizza with pistachios. We really liked it, but we also agreed that with Angelos or Humble just a short walk farther, we aren't likely to return often, especially as they only have five different pizzas each night.

Another problem: after splitting a 12" pizza, I was still hungry. We opted to return to Deagan's, where I had a salad and a piece of chocolate cake.

Saturday, March 9 - For lunch, I bought my standard falafel & hummus wrap with extra hot sauce from Maha's Falafel in the West Side Market. I'm convinced this is the best falafel I've ever had. I know people who've lived in Lebanon who have the same opinion.

In the evening, gieves, darlox, M and I went out to Oberlin to see a showing of the new documentary Apollo 11, which was excellent for space enthusiasts and suprisingly beautiful to boot. Before the movie we ate at The Feve. I had a fancy grilled tuna sandwhich to go with the wasabi rangoons we split. I liked it and would eat there again.

Sunday, March 10 - M's friend Beth came over for craft day while I was at radio and stayed for dinner. We had my variation of my mother's chili, the year's second batch of cornbread and the Blue Cheese Veggie Slaw from the March 2019 Eating Well. The chili and the cornbread were excellent as always. We all enjoyed the slaw, but is very fattening and M told me she prefers vinegary slaw, so I don't think we'll be having it again.

Monday, March 11 - My parents flew from California. I had a pot of the Italian Wedding Soup from the January/February 2019 Eating Well waiting for them. This was only possible because I had made a batch of the Italian Chicken Meatballs on Sunday night to put in the soup. Everyone liked the soup, but honestly the meatballs were the star here. I have other similar soups that would benefit from this meatball recipe, which may become my go to recipe. We also had the year's second batch of roasted asparagus.

Tuesday, March 12 - M & I enjoyed a two part meal. Moosewood Favorites gave us Red Bean and Walnut Spread, which we ate with carrot sticks.

We paired it with Broccoli Salad with Sherry Vinaigrette out of the March 2019 Eating Well. I enjoyed it, but I need to dial back the amount of red onion. It wasn't as good as the Sautéed Broccoli with Peanut Sauce.

Wednesday, March 13 - For dinner tonight we had another two part meal. I made my improvised Israelis Couscous Pilaf. For the second part, I capitalized on the deep Lenten discounts for shrimp and made Zesty Shrimp & Black Bean Salad from way back in the July/August 2012 Eating Well. This is a perennial favorite, and shined again tonight. M says it "tasted like spring."
