This'll be fast, because there were only three of them, and the first of them I've
already summarized so that is basically a copy/paste. I'm now at 3 shows and 7 bands for the year.
1. My friend Tony (formerly
onabus) is the lyricist for a rock band called Herzog. On Friday, February 22, they released a new album as part of a show at the Happy Dog. I saw many radio friends there and had a fine time listening to new and old songs from Herzog. Alas, they didn't have the new album on CD, just vinyl, so I bought a copy of the prior album. The Royal Beasts (featuring RonK filling in on bass) provided competent opening entertainment. I was distracted somewhat by XXX being on the TV. What a good bad movie that was.
2. My friends Brandt and Ed love the Beths, who are from New Zealand and put out an album last year. Somehow, this band from New Zealand has already played two Cleveland gigs, and I was at both of them. The first was
last October at the Beachland Tavern. For their gig on Tuesday, March 5, they'd graduated to the Beachland Ballroom. A whole pile of WRUW people plus my friend Eric were in attendance, and if it wasn't quite as much fun as seeing them in the more intimate space of the Tavern, it was still quite good.
Locals Village Bicycle opened up and were quite good, as were Twin Cities based Bad Bad Hats, whose lead singer really has mastered the art of quasi-awkward stage banter. I already have the single album by The Beths, so I bought one from Bad Bad Hats.
3. On Friday, March 15, M and I went down to Mahall's to see Ben Pirani and the Means of Production. Pirani's first album dropped last year, and it's soul sound fit in well on my radio show. At the low price point and so close to home, it was a no brainer to check out. We both had a good time and I bough the album, which has not worn out its welcome in my kitchen. Wesley Bright's band
The Honeytones opened up, although Wesley didn't appear to perform with them while we were watching.
And that's it so far this year. Thankfully, I have a ton of shows cued up for the future including:
- W 4/17 - The Spring Quartet @ Finney Chapel. Jazz with Jack DeJohnette, Joe Lovano, Esperanza Spalding, and Leo Genovese
- S 5/18 - The Cleveland Orchestra @ Severance. Listed as Mitsuko Uchida Plays Bartók, but my friend Dashon is singing Schubert
- F 5/24 - Rodrigo & Gabriela @ The Chicago Theater (Chicago)
- Su 8/04 - Heart & Joan Jet w/Elle King @ Blossom
- S 8/17 - Iron Maiden @ PPG Paints Area Pittsburgh.
- R 9/12 - Massive Attack @ Detroit Masonic. Rescheduled from March. Hopefully we can still swing this.
- TBD - We had tickets to see The Rolling Stones on F 5/31 in Washington, D.C.. Now that's been postponed. Hopefully it will be rescheduled to a time we can go!
