You Are What You Eat: May 2 through May 9

May 09, 2019 22:54

Bird Nerd weekend put some travel restaurants on the list and created some new challenges for my stats. There was probably more eating out and less cooking than any prior week, but such is life.

Thursday, May 2 - My notes in Moosewood Favorites say that M really liked the Indonesian Rice Salad when I made it in late 2017, but I don't think I'd made it again since then. As it happens, M still really likes this. I'd actually made the rice the night before, so it didn't take too long.

The May 2019 Eating Well featured an Olive Oil Tea Cake. I used the new recipe as an excuse to buy some fancy Meyer lemon infused Olive Oil at the fancy Olive Oil stand at the West Side Market, which is pretty much the only stand I'd never been to before that I really wanted to try. M and I agreed the oil itself smelled wonderful, and it was so lemony that I left out the lemon zest when I made this on Thursday night. I took it in for my coworkers to eat on Friday, and they gave it positive reviews. I'll make this again.

Friday, May 3 - For the first night of bird nerd weekend, M and I got dinner at the Cleats in Marblehead. I had fish tacos, they were fine.

Saturday, May 4 - We woke up and had breakfast at our Holiday Inn. This is technically eating out, I guess, so I'll count it as such, but it feels like a weird thing to list. The pancake robot is now see-through so you can watch its innards as it makes pancakes and plots the destruction of humanity. Anyway, Holiday Inn breakfast is always solid.

The dinner on our evening boat tour around West Sister Island was tacos. They were very good, as they were last year. Since this is a charity event in the same way our trip to Burton was, I'm counting it as "Parties / Friends Cooked."

After the boat M was hungry so we went to Canoe Club Wine Bar where she had a small pizza from the wood fired oven and I had a smore from the same oven. We agreed this was much better than Cleats. I'm listing this as only dessert, as that's all I ate.

Sunday, May 5 - Another morning at Holiday Inn, another breakfast. I like the egg white omelettes.

Back in Lakewood that evening we took M's parents out to Angelos and split two large pizzas.

Monday, May 6 - On Monday morning I made blueberry muffins for everyone. This was the third batch of the year. I had muffins instead of my usual protein-laded cottage cheese for breakfast, which probably explained why I was still starving at work after I ate my lunch. I bought two pieces of pizza from the bistro at work, which was my first expenditure at work this year.

My streak of eating out wasn't over. I had Tribe tickets that night, so I met gieves at Great Lakes Brewing where we split wings and fries before taking the shuttle over to the ballpark, where we saw a true stinker of a game. Fortunately, the weather was as nice as it's been all year and the company was superb with Mikey and Maria joining us mid-game, so I didn't care about how bad the baseball was. I ate nothing at the park.

Tuesday, May 7 - I didn't cook on Tuesday either, but that's because M volunteered to make the Lentil & Roasted Vegetable Salad with Green Goddess Dressing that I'd planned. It was from the March/April 2017 Eating Well, and was the first time M had cooked for me this year. I'll tag that under "Parties / Friends / Family".

After dinner I made food for Wednesday. I made two of my mother's recipes. First up was 3 Cheese Baked Ziti. While that baked, I prepped most of the Tomato & Onion Salad.

Wednesday, May 8 - I went to a concert at the Art Museum, but because I had prepped dinner the night before I ate well first. I suppose this is technically a leftover night, but since I intended for that to happen I'm not counting it as such.

Thursday, May 9 - I had dinner prepped out, but as M had already expressed an inclination to stay in and do stuff on Friday, I suggested we go out tonight and make dinner on Friday. She thought that was a fine idea and selected Bomba, where we enjoyed rattling off the answers to the trivia that were going on. We should have entered apparently, as we crushed every round we were there for.

Afterwards, we walked across the parking lot and I get a cone at Mitchell's Rocky River. Since I hadn't been to this outpost of the chain this year, I guess I'm not counting it as a repeat.
