Last Thursday M and I bought a new car for her. Her old 2008 Hyundai Accent, which she purchased new when she returned from the Peace Corps, had more than 140,000 miles on it, and more importantly, had reached the point where it needed some kind of repair on a regular basis. Since the repairs were on the verge of being equal to a monthy payment on it, it was definitely time to consider a new car, and with it needing new tires soon, there was no time like the present.
After some test drives she settled on a Subaru Impreza. We looked at a couple off of lease, but in recent years the new Impreza's had a bunch of safety features included in them that M was interested in having, so we ultimately went with a brand new 2019. Since we're now in 2020, they were eager to get it off the lot, and we got a decent deal on it. We even got her the Premium edition with heated seats, which are very nice. It's a pleasant dark red color.
Her old car was worth bupkis for a trade-in, in large part because of some extensive dings in the hood that date from when a tree branch fell on it some years ago. We'll figure out how to dispose of it, but it'll probably be donated or scrapped rather than sold.
