Nest 1
Last Wednesday, August 18, was a momentous day in Birdie's life. It was the first night that she slept in her own bedroom. Up until that point she had slept in a Pack N Play in our bedroom, right next to our bed. It was very easy for M to sit up and grab her when necessary. Fortunately, as she got older this became less and less necessary. Birdie isn't quite sleeping all through the night, but now when she stirs it's usually enough to put the pacifier back in her mouth and she returns to a deeper sleep. Or so M tells me - I sleep very heavily and never wake up from Birdie's noises, so we've stayed in the pattern of M taking the night shift and me taking the early morning hours.
With Birdie's sleep patterns cooperating, the time was ripe to move her into the crib in her bedroom. She'd already taken a bunch of afternoon naps there, so it's not like this was totally uncharted territory. The main changes this involved was moving the television out of Birdie's room (convenient in the early months when we had to hold her a lot to get her to sleep) and moving a bunch of baby stuff from our room into her room including the changing table, the diaper bucket, the white noise generator, the baby monitor, baby clothes and and assorted other paraphernalia.
So far the change in sleeping venues has gone pretty well. M still gets up to check on her a few times a night out of habit, but Birdie hasn't shown any particular signs of distress. Now that she can
roll over consistently, Birdie often rolls onto her stomach and sleeps that way. We haven't put the Pack N Play away yet, but that's coming soon.
Nest 2
Some time back M brought some foam tiles and laid them out on our hardwood living room floor so Birdie had somewhere softer to play on. Since Birdie is increasingly able to scoot her way around the floor, the time came to fence her in. This week M bought a big plastic corral, lovingly referred to as baby prison or baby jail, and laid it out on the foam tiles. This gives her a large toy filled area to scoot around in safely.
My mother was here this weekend and spent a lot of Saturday morning locked up in baby prison with Birdie. Baby prison is a lot more fun than regular prison!
