Sick As A Bird

Last Wednesday, Birdie had a her first major episode of sickness. She was totally fine by Wednesday afternoon, but that prior night and morning was "fun".

First, she was fussy all night and really only wanted to sleep when M was holding her. As a result, M didn't get very much sleep and Birdie didn't really get all that much more. When M woke me up, she was clearly at the end of her rope. Birdie wasn't feeling much better, and while she didn't have a fever when I took her she promptly threw up twice, mostly on herself. At that point, I decided to call in sick for work, which means I've now taken 8.5 sick days in just under 19.5 years. Of course, now I can split out that 7.5 of those were for me and 1 was for Birdie.

M went to get some sleep, and Birdie decided that life was only tolerable if she was being held by me at all times. I ended up lying on the sofa most of the morning holding her. Thankfully, she slept much of that time, and by the early afternoon she was acting much more chipper.

Our pediatrician had advised us to come in, as there was some thought that Birdie might have an ear infection, which would explain why she was unhappy any time she was laid down. At our late afternoon appointment Birdie was all smiles and giggles, and to our relief and my total lack of surprise, the pediatrician said she was totally fine in all respects: ears, lungs and everything else that might be reasonably checked.

So that was our first experience with a mildly and briefly sick Birdie. Hopefully she takes after me and doesn't get sick much in coming years.
