The Slush Pile Goes On Forever, and the Party Never Ends*

Aug 03, 2023 23:22

This post is an electronic copy of my slush pile, aka the list of books I mean to get around to reading one day. Because this list is very large and changes very frequently, it doesn't make sense for me to post it over and over again. In a new concept for this journal, instead I will make this a permanent post. I will update this specific post whenever I finish something from it or when I add new items. For entertainment value, compare it to my annotated slush pile from 2018 and see what's still on the list and what isn't.

I have made a rough attempt to organize this list by author, genre and other useful distinctions, but nobody should pretend this is truly in a coherent order that makes sense to anyone other than me.

And as a reminder, you can see the ongoing list of all the books I've read since I started keeping track here.

This doesn't include anything I want to re-read, which may be a weakness, cognizant as I am of Paul Graham's thought that
Reading and experience are usually "compiled" at the time they happen, using the state of your brain at that time. The same book would get compiled differently at different points in your life. Which means it is very much worth reading important books multiple times. I always used to feel some misgivings about rereading books. I unconsciously lumped reading together with work like carpentry, where having to do something again is a sign you did it wrong the first time. Whereas now the phrase "already read" seems almost ill-formed.

*With apologies to Robert Earl Keen.
