Party Wrap

Dec 01, 2005 21:51

I had a really good weekend two weekends ago. On Friday 11/18 butterandjelly, Micah & myself headed to the Palace at Auburn Hills to see Bon Jovi in concert. The traffic was utter crap on the way there, but I managed to sneak the car into the VIP parking area right in front of the building so getting out proved quite simple. As far as architecture, the Palace is just like Gund, except that the Gund doesn't have any championship banners hanging from the roof, and probably won't anytime soon. Ahem. The concert itself was good, although way too much new material was played ( 6 new songs? yech ). The time I saw them in Cleveland was definitely better, and not just because the Goo Goo Dolls opened :-)

We got back at 3am, but I got up early so that I could go shopping to prepare for my fabulous birthday party. I bought $50 of lox ( yum ) and 30 bagels from Pincus Bakery at Cedar & Green, which were pretty close to New York Style. Micah & I then collectively made:

- one pot of regular chili ( double-batch )
- one pot of vegetarian chili
- 3 loaves dark rye bread ( made with stout )
- 1 baked brie
- many baked potatos

with support from

- 4 kinds of cheese, including gouda, goat, striped stilton and the brie
- many kinds of crackers
- the bagels & lox with cream cheese & red onions
- vegi tray
- cider & tea

and for desert

- hot buttered rum
- four kinds of ice cream plus sprinkles and sundae topping

Many people came and dined with us throughout the evening, including gieves, Paco, Cynthia & Alex, JoshS, butterandjelly, undertheivey99, mysterg, Nate, Steve-o, Dutton, rishu73, Watson, infowidget & glacial23, xhollydayx, Ron, Rowan, Kate, Kenichi, Rob, JohnR and probably some others I am forgetting.

I learned the following things:

1. Invite more people. People will automatically control the size by coming through the day and leaving
as they feel it is too crowded. This means I will invite many more WRUWites and coworkers next time around.
2. Buy less lox. Most people are weirded out by it. Their loss :-)
3. Buy more kinds of cold beverages.
4. People are quite content with snack food. Major meal food is not needed - which is why I had leftover baked taters for a few days afterwards.
5. mysterg is a sick fucker. Invite him to more things :-)
6. Micah is happier when I don't chain him to the stove the entire day, even if the omelettes two years ago were delicious :-)

We had many leftovers, so glacial23 and infowidget came over Sunday night and helped us knock the pile down to a reasonable amount.

Save the date: Saturday, November 18, 2006 is the tenative date for my *next* birthday party.

I also got many fine gifts. As previously mentioned my parents got me the LotR movies on DVD. My sister gave me Live at the World Cafe v.10 & Live at the World Cafe 10th Anniversary which caused NPR to throw in The Blue Note Classics & Favorites comp. Sweet. xhollydayx gave me a really sweet book about the Sex Pistols and early British punk called England's Dreaming as well as some of the collected writings of Henry Rollins.

The Rollins book looks very stream of consciousness, to the point that I am considering getting hammered before reading it. Fortunately, I have booze because Kate gave me "The Lonely Man's Night Out." Ok, so that's not what it is really called, but it does have a bottle of Jack Daniels to drink and a deck of cards for solitaire :-) plus a pair of dice.

I'm not sure what good the dice are for the lonely man, but as it happens rishu73 convinced me that I wasn't geeky enough so I've started gaming with him & some coworkers. Now I can roll damage with Jack Daniels dice, which seems oddly appropriate. You can follow our progress or lack thereof here if you are so inclined. I understand we get to become Satanists at some point so I am understandly quite excited by this :-) Plus there are snacks.

Remember, Saturday, November 18, 2006. It's gonna be great. More details in 11 months :-)
