i am a certified elitist indie fuck. the reason that i generally am not a fan of popular music is that it all sounds the same. the industry finds something that the people will buy and then mass- produces it, as a result we find ourselves with 20 avril lavignes and 41.3 good charlottes. i can respect this new genre of plaster-cast bands and singers as entertainers, certainly, but i haven't found one yet that i can respect as a musician. i like 'weird' bands because they are less fake, so much more an embodiment of rock, rap, country (what have you) than their radio counterparts. raw and un-synthesized, refreshingly not funneled through valves to create britney-spearsesque sounds. i also find that people that buy into this type of music do it because they are hooked into the master switch that tells them what it's cool to like nowadays- the so-called MTV generation. frank zappa drew his influence from modern-day european composers, avril lavigne drew her influence from britney's songwriting team
( ... )
That is not at all what I said. I definately didn't say that everyone who didn't like popular music was an elitist fuck. What pisses me off is people who like music just because it's weird and different, mostly stuff that involves little actual music making.
