In lieu of reliable public transportation, you absolutely, positively must have a car in this part of the countryside. I feel like you'd kind of be wasting your remaining time here if you can't get out and experience things that you want to.

Sorry to be brutally honest about my opinion. :D

Good luck!

It's all good; an honest opinion (even the brutal ones!) are needed right now.

But again, what's considered the bigger waste of remaining time? Being able to go to local towns in Ehime, or being able to see China or other parts of Asia? I can't have the car AND do vacation this spring. I just can't. Not with (what's now) looking like 3000 worth of car payments in addition to the 800 I owe my school. If I keep the car, I'm also worried that I'm jeopardizing my ability to move to a different part of Japan.

*snuggles you* I know I haven't really been commenting much lately, but I do read. <3 :)

Else, you're stuck in a similar situation as my friend is! :( She was overly frustrated over her own predicament too, but in the end she decided to just screw it and get the car, and she opted to take up a part-time to fund the expenses of getting a car.

*hugs* Else, if you don't mind, can I have your address? I would love to send you a Christmas card. :) You can email it to me at enervate6@yahoo.com if you don't want to reply directly, but yeah. Thought a little festive greetings would cheer you up in a way or two ;)

I had a car when I lived in Honai. It really was quite nice to be able to get out of there at a moment's notice and have the freedom. Downsides are many though. The other teacher in Honai got a $600 speeding ticket while driving my car, I had to drive on an international permit much longer than it was intended and it cost alot of money. I think that if I did it all over again, I would buy a battery assisted bike instead. I don't know if you have had the chance to ride one yet but if you haven't then you really should give it a try. Those little suckers scoot right along. Could easily get you to Yawatahama eki with no problem and from there you have the train. They would also get you over to Ikata and back. Go for one with a better battery pack though cause once the battery dies it is a huge pain to pedal.
