Abilities: Capable of fighting with a variety of weapons, can also cast spells, is an expert at summoning/calling demons, and she is probably the best person to come to when you need someone cursed. Her strongest point lies in demonology, however. Being a demon for so long, she knows a good deal about almost all demonic races. She can speak and write basic conversational phrases in countless languages; although she is only fluent in English, French, and Latin.
She is no longer a demon, and therefore no longer has the abilities or the lifespan of a demon. She is mortal, and is still adjusting to not having all of her previous abilities. As a demon, Anyanka was able to teleport, use telekinesis, regenerate, assume human shape, have psychic abilities, had a form of invulnerability, and could also sense the presence of souls. She also had a demon amulet that allowed her to grant any wish that she saw fit. Although she no longer has access to these abilities, she is still able to sense the presence of souls in others, which must be a trait that lingered within her after having it for over 1,000 years.
Personality: Anya is the most awkward human you will ever meet. This stems from the fact that she is about 1,045 years old and has only been human for the past four years of her life. She says exactly what she's thinking, no matter how delicate the situation. She doesn't lie, as she has a tendency to blurt out anything that's on her mind. She is sarcastic, and very bitter about the way the world doesn't seem to turn in her favor. She doesn't bother concealing her feelings, as she has no idea how to. She's still learning how to adjust and cope with human emotions and feelings, and doesn't quite get things such as sadness or guilt. Her morals are a bit skewed, and don't seem to follow anyone else's. She thinks that as long as someone innocent isn't killed, it's all fair game. Among Buffy and the Scooby gang, Anya fits along with Xander perfectly as the comic relief. She doesn't know the meaning of the word tact, always says truthful things in a very blunt fashion, and makes quirky jokes that are often more offensive than funny. She doesn't understand when people get mad at the things she says or does, and often gets hurt when she is scolded for being insensitive or strange. She believes in ideals such as trading children for cash, and being able to have lots of sex whenever and wherever the mood strikes her. She knows nothing of modesty, and often has to be reminded of personal boundaries.
Anya isn't stupid, however. She is very skilled with magics and summoning various demons and portals to other realms. She knows a good deal about any kind of demon or monster you can think up, due to her incredibly long lifespan. She is a skilled enough fighter, due to being a vengeance demon for well over 1,000 years. She doesn't know how humans work, but she knows exactly how demons think and act. She doesn't have the best of attention spans, and tends to give up on things when they seem useless to her, but Anya is skilled at helping defeat the monsters that plague Sunnydale. Her greatest pride in life is possessing money. Anya loves money. This cannot be stressed enough. Anya thinks money is power, and strives to own as much money as possible.
Background: Anya was born with the name Aud, in the year 860. She grew up in the Swedish village of Sjornjost, where she lived a simple life and grew up to breed and raise rabbits. She married a man named Olaf when she was 20 years old, a Viking warrior who spent more time drinking at the bar than with her. After her husband sleeps with a barmaid at the local tavern, a furious Aud unleashes her anger upon Olaf and uses dark arts to turn him into a troll. Her spell and act of vengeance attracted the attention of a demon known as D'Hoffryn. Offering Aud the power to grant wishes, she eagerly accepted, and assumed the role of a vengeance demon.
Along with her new life came a new name, and Anyanka was chosen for her by D'Hoffryn. She took easily to her new life, and took great enjoyment in helping scorned women across the universe seek revenge upon men. While she couldn't act until a woman actually made a wish, Anya's interpretation of the wishes was often much more destructive than the woman had originally intended. Anyanka lived for over a thousand years as a vengeance demon, traveling around Earth with her friend Halfrek (also known as "Hallie"). She has met Dracula, and claims to have met countless other historical figures. She was around during the Russian Revolution in 1905, and claims that it was a wish she granted that sparked the entire revolution. She witnessed the Salem Witch Trials in Massachusetts, and has seen countless other wars and events in other worlds and dimensions.
It wasn't until 1998 that Anyanka made her way into Sunnydale, California. Assuming the name Anya Emerson, she uses magic to enroll herself in high school, and approaches a distraught Cordelia Chase after the girl's boyfriend (Xander Harris) cheated on her with his best friend (Willow Rosenburg). A wish made by Cordelia causes Anya to shift the world into an alternate reality, where vampires rule society and humans are treated as cattle. It isn't until Anya's amulet is broken inside the alternate reality that things go back to normal, and Anya is made mortal by a furious D'Hoffryn. With no way to get anyplace else, Anya remains inside Sunnydale and stays enrolled in high school. During this time she becomes close to Xander and his friends, who know her role as a vengeance demon. She attends senior prom with Xander, and quickly falls head over heels in love with him, which she doesn't understand at all. Not used to human emotions and feelings, Anya gets scared and runs away, fleeing Sunnydale upon graduation.
She returns about six months later, to find Xander living in his mother's basement and bouncing from job to job. Anya quickly attaches herself to Xander once again, and the two grow close, much to the dismay of Xander's friends. Somehow, Anya proves to be useful to Buffy and the others, with her knowledge of demons and ability to help fight. Her lack of normal emotions and sympathy prove to be a road block in the others accepting her, but they slowly but surely come to think of her as part of the Scooby gang.
Anya and Xander grow close as the years go by, and he proposes to her during the middle of another apocalypse. Anya accepts, but their good news is put on hold and kept quiet as everyone has to cope with the death of Buffy. It isn't until after Buffy is brought back to life that Anya reveals her good news, and goes about planning her wedding. It is during this time that Anya is given control of The Magic Box, a magic shop run by Buffy's ex-watcher (Rupert Giles). Anya proves that despite she in no way has any right to work with human beings, she can handle money. When Giles leaves, Anya happily assumes the role of owner and manager of the shop, until it is destroyed later that year.
It was on her wedding day that things went wrong for Anya. Stood up at the alter by Xander, Anya vowed for revenge. It was her hurt and anguish that called D'Hoffryn back to her, and Anya once again became a vengeance demon. It became a personal goal to trick Buffy and all of Xander's women friends into attempting to wish harm upon Xander, and it is because of her quest for revenge that she ends up sleeping with Spike. This causes problems for everyone involved, and it is because of this event that Xander and Anya are never really able to fix their relationship.
Anya is a vengeance demon for several months, although she doesn't have the same spark she once had, after living as a human for several years. It is at the urging of her friend Halfrek that Anya takes on a wish that ends with her murdering a large group of fraternity members. Upon discovering it was Anya who committed the murder, Buffy attempts to kill the demon. Anya puts up a good fight, and even keeps going when stabbed through the chest. It is the one time in the entire series that Anya is shown as strong and capable, and able to keep up with the slayer, giving the other a run for her money. In the end, she begs D'Hoffryn to be mortal again, because she doesn't like harming others any longer. Her time as a mortal has softened her, as has her love for Xander. Anya also asks to bring the boys back to life, believing that their deaths were truly a mistake. D'Hoffryn leads Anya to believe she will be killed as a price to make the young men come back to life, and she willingly accepts this fate. However, her oldest and closest friend Halfrek that pays the price for Anya to become mortal once again, and she is killed in Anya's place.
A very guilty and horrified Anya is mortal once again, and slowly assumes her role as part of the Scooby Gang. She helps Buffy and the others take in the potential slayers, and provides much needed sarcasm along the way. She grows particularly close to a young man named Andrew Wells, who Anya feels a kinship to, because of their similar fashion of making it into the Slayer group. She teases him relentlessly, and makes fun of his being a nerd, but she actually has a bit of respect for the boy. When they are facing a large battle up against the First evil within the halls of Sunnydale High School, Andrew and Anya stand together and fight alongside one another. It is here that Anya is killed, brutally sliced in half by the sword of a Harbinger demon. Her body remained within the school as the city crumbles into the Hellmouth.
