Your Cynical Scribe is not dead! She's merely been living a wild, non-stop life of skating, sleeping and lamenting her lack of unrestricted internet access at work. In fact, when she read this news item on Slate.com:

Form helps a lot when it comes to gaining speed. Especially on cross-overs which is where you really get power. Just from assessments and watching you do your crossovers, I think this is something you do need to pay special attention to (I don't know if anyone told you that in your assessment review). If you feel comfortable ask a coach to help you refine your technique, especially learning to push your inside leg back after crossing over. Most people, when learning, tend to just step over their inside foot. We did a nice form drill one night where we skated around the small circles on the rink, which kept us doing constant crossovers and forced us to practice form with every stride.

Also, have you guys done the pyramid sprint drill yet? You do two laps of sprinting, get a break while the second group does the same, then three laps, then 4, laps...etc, until you get to 7. Then you go backwards: 6 laps, 5 laps...THAT helps with endurance.

Yay for derby!!! Glad you are having fun!
