“You’re doing it wrong!”
“No I’m not,” Chuck growls. “It’s Hungry Hungry Hippos! You just hit the thing. You can’t do it wrong!”
“Then why isn’t yours feeding then?” Blair demands, eyes narrowing. “Are you letting me win?”
“Of course not.”
“Liar!”
“No, really. Look,” he sighs, exasperated. He taps the back of his hippo several times. Nothing happens. “It’s jammed. I think the spring is stuck.”
“Well, fix it!”
“I don’t know how to - ”
“Nate could fix it,” she challenges, snatching it from him.
“Give it back!” he snarls. He will fix that damn hippo or die trying.

She knows he’s near. Can tell from the way something uncoils within her, stretching out seeking him. Like an invisible spring connecting them, drawing them back towards one another, even as they fight its insistent pull.
It’s always like that.
If only it were a string instead, something that could be severed. But it isn’t, and all they can do is strain against it, deny the attraction, and pray that one day they will get far enough apart to snap the bond.
But that won’t happen tonight, not as their dark gazes meet, and desire propels them together once more.
