This is a familiar story. Maybe you do need to stand up to them and back away for a bit. Ideally, the goal is to be able to interact with them and show your love but not get caught up in the "politics" of the situation or get your feelings trod on. It's really hard to do, though. Good luck! Congratulations on taking a step forward.

Of course they do! Especially when it comes to those you love and feel bonded to! It's really hard to break away from old behaviors. I think one of the important things is to have something new to put into the place of the old behavior, to have something positive you're striving for (your own well-being and peace of mind, for example) rather than just trying to stop doing something that comes naturally to you.
