Michelle Obama & Patriotism

I thought Michelle Obama gave a very nice, stirring speech at the convention last night. I found it quite moving at times. I thought the beginning was a bit too much about her brother (who cares?) but she wove it all in by the end. It was a little awkward at the beginning, too, before she warmed up. I also think it was a little silly with the girls ( Read more... )

I'm told the kids were there to show them as a more Kennedyesque. All I can say is that Sasha gets that same evil look in her eye that SG does.

Headline from fark.com:

Biggest story from DNC's first night: Sasha Obama is cuter than Hello Kitty having a tea party with Stephanie from Lazy Town with two kitty cats on Unicorn day

what? you don't think that America is The Greatest Place On Earth(tm)? scandal!

thanks for the link to the speech, and the story. I thought the Time article was really interesting, and hopefully I'll have a chance to watch the speech soon. the article, as with so many things, seemed really to be saying that - as always - the extremes both have something to learn from each other.

I watched most of it last night and just watched all of it in your links. I just don't like her, though. Her speech didn't make me dislike her more, which it could have if she'd made another verbal gaffe, but it didn't do anything to make me like her more either. Nothing so scripted could possibly be sincere.

Since I imagine she (and Barack, and McCain, and Biden, and whoever McCain picks) are pretty scripted from here out, does that mean that none of them can sway you at this point? Or is it because with Michelle it's not about policy, but about personality?

Yes, it's hard to know what's sincere. But, unfortunately, that means she has no chance of changing some opinions about her, I guess.

I'm not her biggest fan, either, but I thought she did a good job, said everything she needed to say, and was overall a strength to the campaign in that speech.

Or is it because with Michelle it's not about policy, but about personality?--Policies have to be planned and designing speeches to convince people that one's policies are the best is the work of politicians. It's no different than when I write a grant and try to convince people to give me money to carry out my research projects. So, no, I don't think sincerity really applies to them. For the most part, they don't lie about what they think is the best way to run the country ( ... )

Of course, I wouldn't extrapolate her views of American society on to her husband.

Fair enough, then.
