Ragging on Ramirez again

Oh, and I forgot to include the hot-hitting utility infielder who's on the DL (disabled list, FYI) as well.  There's a pitcher on the 60-day DL who I've never heard of and I think hasn't thrown an ML pitch this season, but that's less of a bother.  That said...

Earlier this week, Aramis Ramirez dove for a sharp-hit ball down the third-base line, and took the ball right on the kisser.

How does that happen??

I mean, I'm glad he's not seriously hurt -- though I find it ironic that the injury gods only decided to "tease" us with this one -- but still, I'm not sure whom to bash, and I feel like somebody deserves tagging for this one.  Aramis, for misjudging the ball that badly?  Seriously, he'd gone fully horizontal in his dive, and the ball apparently jumps 2+ feet to smack him in the face instead of the glove.  Or do I mash on the way-too-many sportscasters who have recently described Ramirez as a "good" third baseman, defensively speaking.

Really?  Good, huh?  I could have sworn he'd barely gotten above replacement level a few years ago.  "Good" does not equal slightly above average.  Not in my book.

Ah, no.  My mistake.

He's BELOW average.

Good grief.  Are you sure this is his contract year?  If he wants to play baseball, shouldn't he show he's got something in the goddamn tank?

I'm throwing in with the folks who think he's retiring after this year.  He's suggested it a number of times before, for this year and in previous years.  I think it's happening.

It's too bad, he seems like the kind of guy who could still be a badass, at the plate at least, but something is holding him back -- emotions, spirit, injuries, I don't know.  It's not like I could ever play at his level.  But I just groan every time he comes to bat with a man on base and the Cubs behind.  He manages to hit if the Cubs are ahead or 0-0, but otherwise, prepare for something weak, folks.

Bleah.

cubs, baseball, ragging on ramirez again
