You know what's REALLY confusing? Star Trek XI actually seemed to understand the fandom. Heck, some stuff I didn't even understand myself. I have seen all sorts of people squeeing about Sulu's fighting technique being fencing - and I've never seen anything about that in the first six movies.
But yeah, at one point in the movie the Klingons and Uhura disappeared never to be seen again and along with them went the movie I was actually beginning to get excited to watch.
And yeah, you are absolutely right. The secondary villain didn't make any sense at all really. I think if the secondary villain wasn't played by such an AWESOME actor, that might have been more obvious to me.
Heck, Benedict Cumberbatch couldn't do much with the material they gave him. He's still awesome, but the writing here is absolute trash.
