So out of boredom and burn-out combined, I did a private movie-marathon today. Couldn't get to hang out with people, couldn't bring myself to write, proof-read, or play MORE Prototype (played it for about 4 hour straight earlier today... and considering playing it now before I go to sleep. Awesome game).
So I watched four movies.
I've wanted to see Hancock since it was coming out, but then I heard mixed reviews, and the timing was bad for me to go to a theater.
Honestly, I thought it was a good movie. I wish they had DONE MORE, but I didn't find the plot-choices bad, it was just a unique spin on 'super heroes'. Which is a good thing. Honestly, I'm not very impressed with comic books, so I considered this as valid as any origin story I've heard out of them. I just wanted more super-powers in it at the end of the day.
I would've preferred a *cleaner* set-up for the family and Hancock himself, but... eh, it works.
Then I watched three randomly rented films.
'The Gene Generation' started out with promise for a post-apocalyptic sci-fi story, but in the end I found it more wanting than delivering. And the nudity for the lead character was simply gratuitous, especially with her skimpy her clothes were to start out with. Parts were good, parts were bad. Overall it gets an 'eh, not bad', but I probably wouldn't specifically watch it again.
"Chocolate", by the guy who did the Protector and Ong Bak, was actually awesome. A very 'me movie'. Previous 'me movies' include Equilibrium, Taken, and the Incredibles. Very satisfying action, a charming premise, and a kick-butt female character in the lead, who remains completely adorable throughout the entire thing. It had the usual ailments of Asian/French movies, in that they feel compelled to give a bitter-sweet ending rather than just giving the damn happy ending we want, but the whole movie was so good, I can forgive the bitterness of the ending to a big degree. Just not completely. A good movie, I'd watch it again, just not sure if I'd *buy* it.
Then I watched 'Outlander', with Jim Caviezel. It also had Ron Perlman and Jon Hurt, but Perlman only had a ... supporting roll, really. I have to say, this movie was actually a really solid sci-fi movie, with one of the best monster-designs I've seen since Aliens or Predator. I really liked this monster (though the head-design could be a little sleeker for my tastes).
I recommend Outlander, in fact. If you like sci-fi and monsters, I think you'll enjoy this movie.
Please let me know if there's any hanging out going on in Austin. I really need to hang out with peeps. Feeling tired and lonely these days.
