Student (gr 7/8) responses to the poem ranged from thinking that an ode should be about something more important(we read Neruda's Ode to Socks earlier), to feeling really sad for the artichoke that after all of his dreams and protection that he gets drowned and consumed.
Many students loved the garden full of vegetable action and characters, and most students were puleld in to calm and connection with the idea of eating the peaceable flesh of the heart...much discussion of recent artichokes eaten for dinner...discussion of his "small" topic odes vs. his love poems (we read one of those earlier, too) - a student is bringing in a book of 20 Neruda love poems to share...in one class, a student snoted that if you break it down, you get peace-able - and if the heart is peace-able inside all of that armor and matial draming...then what does consuiming the flech do for us and our own armored hearts?
Pretty awesome. Thanks again for the vegetable love!
