A lot of people are shaking their heads at the Islanders for this deal and so am I. I'm not saying DiPietro isn't one of the best american born goaltenders the league has seen in a while (Ryan Miller being the other) But a 30-24-5 season record last year with a 3.02 goals-against average and a .900 save percentage doesn't scream 15 year, 67.5 ( Read more... )

For starters this is the same owner who signed Yashin to a 10 year $80 million contract. He isn't the brightest of minds to come out of Japan I can tell you that. And therein lies the problem. He is not only a foreigner...but he is from Japan!!! What in the what does anyone from Japan know about hockey? They hired a great GM in the spring, Neil Smith, only to fire him two months later, for lack of a better term, he wasn't a "yes" man. He wanted to run the team his way, and Mr. Wang or Wong or whatever it is, didn't like that. So what do they do after firing Smith? They promote their freaking back-up goalie to be the new GM. Not only was he a back-up goalie, and not a good one at that, but during the lock out and strike he was one of the most vocal anti- NHL/management players to speak his mind. I for one am thankful I am not an Islanders fan...and for those poor, poor, suffering remaining fans on the right side of Long Island, where the Islanders call home, I am at a loss of words in the condolences department.

and it isn't like people can argue that he's a great crunch player and that we just haven't been able to see him in top form when there's a cup run on the line. cos i've seen him in a crunch situation. little thing called the olympics, and that was a clearly stunk up performance. if miller wasn't out with a broken thumb, he probably would have nabbed top spot from dipietro to begin with.

i dunno, pretty bad when the first reaction any other GM i've seen who was asked their opinion of "The Deal" began each answer by stifling what was probably a huge chuckle.
