Gun Crimes

Every so often, I have a moment when I just wonder what is wrong with the US. I'm working on taking notes on a criminology chapter about controlling gun crimes and I just had another one of those moments.

People murdered by guns, 2006

Australia                         27
England and Wales     59

I'm guessing the other countries have stricter gun laws

that could definitely be a part of it. I'm not quite sure though, since the book is focusing on gun policy in the US specifically, but I'd be surprised if that wasn't at least a small part of it.

Yep :( Even when you take into account the size of the populations, the difference between the US and other industrialised nations is extreme.

The UK has very strict gun laws, which explains the low murder rate for guns. There have been two major gun crimes in the last 15 years and I can remember both vividly.

Ummmmmmmm have you ever heard of the second amendment?
It's the united states. People have guns. If people have guns, people will use guns.
As a comparison, I am now over a quarter of a century old, have been to several nations (not the us), and have witnessed more than my fair share of shady situations for my age. Yet I have not once even seen a firearm in with my own eyes. And to be honest, I actually quite like guns.
American society is just... different in some respects I think.
