I know that several of you haven't finished Earthsea yet (so no you're not alone) but figured I would go ahead and kick the February selection out there so I can order from Amazon. (Yes, it's all about me. ;)

How about I, Robot? Swap back to SF, and it was on the suggested list last time. If it sounds good, also if anyone wants to claim ( Read more... )

Just as a note, I, Robot is a collection of short stories, not an actual novel. Not that this precludes its selection as a monthly book, but I want to make sure we know what we're picking here.

It does have a vague framework story, but it's definitely a collection of short stories. The movie was ... sort of based on one of the stories, with elements from a couple of others, including Asimov's now-famous Three Laws.

I'd like to throw out Lightning Thief for a future month - Maybe March. A friend of mine loved it and has been trying to get me to read it, and there is now a movie coming out. I am unlikely to see the movie before it hits Netflix, but I am a big believer in "read the book first"!

If anything, I've become a big believer in the other direction, if I haven't read the book by about the time the movie is announced.

Basically, the movie invariably leaves out some things in the book (time constraints and all), thereby often leaving one disappointed. I'd rather enjoy a decent movie for being a decent movie instead of a disappointing adaptation, which many are. Then I can appreciate the book more for the bits that aren't in the movie as well.

But that's just my take. I admittedly see a lot of movies as well as reading a good number of books, so that probably colors my view. :)
