grade 5 analysis exam

analysis exam today!

that has got to be one of the most annoying exams i have ever written. it's not just that it's hard, it's long too. i know english exams and various other school exams are also long, but analysis is the kind of thing that takes a lot of time. at least in something like the english exam, you know what you have to write about, it just takes time writing it. in this exam, it was long and i had to figure out what the hell the chords were. i know i can figure it out if i had time and did trial and error (which is usually how we figure out the chords) but i didn't have the time...

i really shouldn't complain though, because i had it very, very easy.

first question: fugue analysis. i started looking over it and then realized it looked familiar. and guess what? it was that hard fugue with the stupid countersubject i analyzed for homework weeks ago. yes! i should give my teacher a present or something. not only did i know what the countersubject was for the exam, the questions the exam asked were similar to the questions our class assignment sheet asked.

second question: sonata analysis. i was still happy about the fugue when i turned to look at the sonata. seriously, my jaw dropped when i looked at it and i started laughing (quietly...though the people around me looked at me strangely). it was the sonata i'm playing for ARCT! just last week, i was wondering why the world can't be nice to me and let us analyze pieces that i play. it was a good thing i was familiar with it because it still took me while to answer all the questions. i'm pretty sure i wouldn't have finished the exam otherwise.

third question: lieder analysis. stupid chords. my brain is fried from trying to figure them out. the piece couldn't even begin with a normal chord. i probably lost a lot of marks here. i was going to give up on the harmonic analysis but then i saw it was worth 25 marks... i mean, how do you modulate from f major to a major through f-sharp minor? we had to write this kind of remote modulation in grade 5 harmony, but still. it took me forever to figure something that made some sense.

fourth question: new music analysis. pretty easy. then again, it's only worth 10 marks (which isn't a lot, considering the exam only had four major questions).

afterward, my eyes hurt because i was staring at the music for so long.

so my experiece with theory is pretty much over now (unless i fail). i can't say i'll miss it all that much.

i really need to clean my room.
