New Year for Sam and Dean. Sitting in the motel room, each on their own bed, tv on and there's this huge clock on the tv. Midnight, and Sam says "Dean. Get up". So Dean's like "wha?" and stands up and Sam like. Takes two big quick steps and hugs Dean and Dean's like wtf let go and Sam just. Holds on.

Sam glances at the door himself, something tightening in the pit of his stomach. He doesn't want to leave Dean on this night, not really, but staying isn't an option either. Not anymore.

"Nah, I'm good," he answers the unspoken question, a bit rushed at the edges as he checks his pockets one more time after shooting Dean another comforting smile. Stop worrying, I'll be fine.

He looks around their room one more time, fighting the frown that wants to settle on his face, and turns back to Dean.

"Guess I'd better go now," he says, and doesn't move a muscle.

“Okay.” Dean shrugs again and looks down at his fingers, tracing nonsense patterns on the not quite clean wooden tabletop. After a short pause, with Sam showing no signs of actually leaving, he adds gruffly,“Well, get out of here, then, kiddo, before I ground you.”

Sam is fidgeting, and Dean makes a shooing motion at him. “Go on, Sammy. Someone’s gotta hold down the ford in case anything weird goes down tonight, might as well be me.” Their eyes meet across the room, locked gazes heavy with unspoken things. Then Dean looks away, ignoring the empty feeling settling in his gut. He’s used to it of late.

Sam nods slowly before he zips up his jacket, making his way to the door. He stands still, hand on the doornob, "You're sure?" on the tip of his tongue, but as he turns and sees his brother still looking away, his mouth snaps shut.

He murmurs a quick "I'll see you later" before he opens the door, closing it behind him without looking back himself. This shouldn't be so hard.

Jess glances up as she hears the soft click of a door falling shut, before she looks back down and resumes the re-tracing of the patterns Dean made seconds ago. She doesn't feel like following Sam, not tonight. She knows where he's going anyway, no point in making sure he'll be okay.

Huffing out a quick breath, she shakes her head, and tries to get rid of the heavy feeling settling on her shoulders.

Happy Fucking New Year, Jess she thinks, and smiles bitterly.
