July [ CHARACTER INFORMATION ]
Name: Adah Price. Also goes by “Hada Nelle Ecirp”, which is her full name spelled backwards, or “benduka,” a nickname given to her while in the Congo.
Age: 15
Gender: Female
Fandom: The Poisonwood Bible
Timeline: I am taking Adah from immediately after the ants attack the village.
History:
Here is a link to the SparkNotes for the novel.
Character Personality:
On the outside, Adah Price seems to be the epitome of a troubled, or possibly “special needs,” child. She is quiet, almost too much so- she sets quotas on the number of words she may use in a month, so she doesn’t speak much. She prefers herself to the company of others, often staring mutely at someone when they speak to her, or not paying attention at all. In fact, most people load their secrets onto her, because they think she can’t speak.
Part of this is caused by her disability, her Hemiplegia. Half of her body is weaker than the other, which she secretly resents and yet subtly finds comforting at the same time. Adah walks with a limp, dragging half of her body behind her. Part of her brain is also messed up- she likes to say that it was the “rash impulse portion” that got destroyed at birth. Most people see this and think that she is slow, when she is anything but. Adah enjoys going slower than the other girls sometimes, for it leaves her alone with her thoughts. But she wishes that sometimes her sisters wouldn’t rush ahead- for example, when Leah leaves her alone in the jungle and rushes home, allowing for a lion to tail Adah all the way back to their house.
But the inner Adah is much more complex. On the inside, Adah is bursting with thoughts and ideas about the world and those who live in it. She is curious, always trying to learn new things and new ideas. She asks the Congolese to teach her their language, and studies their speech patterns and how words fit together in certain ways to create different ideas. Adah is a fan of languages- it is said in canon that she and her twin sister Leah both excel in spelling bees, even passing their older sister. Adah has also learned how to read, write, and even speak fluent French, though she doesn’t care to speak it much. She is said to enjoy numbers- their repetitive motions and similarity pleases her. She is quick at doing math, often stunning other people. Adah is also an avid reader, and reads books first forward, and then backwards. While the other girls are sailing onto other books, Adah takes her slow time reading every word backwards. In addition, she also likes to spell things backwards, and create backwards words and palindromes. Her disability allows her to think of things in different ways, and by far she is the most creative and crafty of the Price sisters.
When it comes to her twin sister, Leah, Adah has a love-hate relationship. On one hand, Leah is her twin, and a part of her family. She will always be devoted to her sister, even when she doesn’t feel like being devoted at all. But on the other hand, she sees Leah as the usurper of her power, the one that turned to her in the womb and said “you’ll come out disfigured and I’ll come out healthy, okay?” The two are essentially exact opposites of each other, each lacking what the other has. Adah envies her sister for having two perfectly healthy sides of her body, and resents that she always tries to get on her father’s good side. While her twin tries to earn all the praise, Adah is stuck trailing on her coattails as the other gifted kid who doesn’t speak much. She makes no attempt to keep this resentment hidden from Leah.
Adah also lacks what the majority of her family has in abundance: faith in God. After an incident in Sunday school where she realized that God had a rather pick and choose method of selecting Christians, she found that she no longer believed in the mystic deity that the rest of her family so fervently worshiped. She often mocks him, using the capital He but making fun of him in the same sentence. The same goes with her father- instead of calling him dad or sir, she names him Our Father, a reference to his profession. It sets her apart from her sister’s devotion to their father, and makes her less personalized to him. She doesn’t want to be a part of his world, and so she alienates herself from it without saying a word. Adah is sarcastic, almost mocking of the contradictory world of her family. The only time she seems in earnest about anything is when she speaks of knowledge, or learning, or the Kilanga people. All her thoughts about her family are cloaked in a veil of cynicism.
Character Abilities:
Nothing.
Well, nothing superhuman. Adah is extremely intelligent, and learns very quickly. She picks up languages at an astounding rate for someone who doesn’t talk; Adah is fluent in French before she even ends up in the Congo, and learns Kilanga, the . She can even outsmart predators, escaping from a lion with nothing more than an interesting story to tell. She creates codes for her writing, and is a talented artist. Also, she’s really good at staying out of sight and invisible when she needs to. Spying is kind of her expertise -- she spies on quite a few people in the book, and enjoys being able to stay hidden and find out other people’s secrets.
Silence is also one of Adah’s gifts; she can go without speaking for weeks, if she desires. Words are a precious commodity to her, and she is a very good listener. As long as people don’t mind her keeping their secrets in a notebook, she’s very willing to listen to people (and can also serve as an unwilling listener -- it’s not like she can complain when quiet!).
Character Weaknesses:
Intelligence, as much as it aids Adah, is also one of her major weaknesses. Because she relies so much on information that's found within her own mind or in books, she tends to reject the ideas of other people -- particularly if they are people who've slighted her in the past, like her sisters or her parents. Sometimes, this devotion to pure knowledge gets her in trouble -- people tend to think she's an idiot, because she doesn't speak as much as a 'normal' person. She treasures silence, but it also makes people overlook her. Sometimes, she is even ignored as if she isn't there. In addition, she also has a physical weakness -- her right side is crippled, a result of a neurological condition that she has had since birth. Adah cannot run quickly, and even her walking is stilted; she pulls her right leg behind herself as she walks, a permanent limp. If she attempts to get away from something quickly, she tends to fall over -- as in the ant attack, where she is overwhelmed by the ants as her family leaves her behind. Self-reliance is something she prides herself on, but it sometimes fails her. People tend to believe she can handle herself, and leave her behind.
[ SOUL CAMPAIGN SECTION ]
What are the abilities that your character will retain in Soul Campaign?
Since most of Adah’s abilities are psychological or intellectual, she will be retaining all of them: the ability to listen, retain information in a surprising capacity, and pick up new things quickly, as well as her artistic ability.
Because of prior time spent in the game and some positive character development from the last time she was in Death City, she will gain a more social outlook, as well as open up to people more.
What are the weaknesses that your character will lose or gain in Soul Campaign?
Adah loses the weakness of people overlooking her -- as of her last trip to Death City, she realized that there are usually more than enough people willing to listen and pay attention to the silent. But other than that, there aren't many weaknesses that she could lose, as most are psychological in nature.
Keeping the game’s premise in mind, please give us a brief explanation of your plans for your character in Soul Campaign.
Troll troll troll.
And also, Adah would like to get another partner, she thinks. She will grow without her sisters, because without her family she is able and willing to open up to other people, albeit slowly. Maybe she'll even hold an entire conversation with someone!
If your character has difficulty communicating (or can't communicate at all, e.g., most animal characters), we require you to please elaborate on how you intend to treat this in the game.
[ WEAPON ONLY SECTION ]
Why your character should be a Weapon:
Adah isn't a leader, and would hardly consider herself as such. She's much more of a person who would sit behind the scenes and watch everyone were no one to grab her and drag her into the spotlight. As a weapon, she doesn't have the limelight effect -- she can let someone else figure out what strategy to take, while still assisting and being present. In addition, Adah's hemiplegia would make it extremely hard for her to get around as a meister. As a weapon, she doesn't have that handicap holding her back from participating in missions.
What is your character's Weapon form?:
Adah is a
Tsonga Battle Axe, reminiscent of her time spent in the Congo. About three feet long, it could be used as a blade or a club, depending on which side you attack with. Her skills are primarily healing and passive skills, because of her watchful nature.
• At very low resonation levels, Adah is capable of healing minor scratches and wounds. Anything too serious, she could only heal slightly, and would still require immediate medical attention. She can't save people from death. As resonation increases, the amount and severity of the wounds she can heal goes up. Alternatively, if there is bad resonation between Adah and her Meister, she can inflict small bruises and cuts.
• The highest resonation point possible causes Adah to unleash an attack that makes the foe move backwards. For example, if the enemy wants to move right, and goes to move right, they move left instead. It also slows the enemy down, as if they were suddenly stuck in a movie that was being flipped through frame by frame. It only lasts for a short time, and is dependent upon the wavelengths of Adah and her Meister (though of course, they can work to increase the amount of time an enemy is confused).
[ SOUL INFORMATION ]
Soul Description: Silent, Sardonic, Curious, Backwards, Watchful, Artistic
Soul Appearance: Adah's soul is large in size, and forest green. It has no mouth, but makes up for that by having extremely large eyes. The nose is small, dwarfed in size by the eyes on the soul. In addition, the right side of the circle is slightly lopsided, as if something messed up while making it.

First Person:
[ The text that's typed in is deliberate, like someone's choosing their words carefully. ]
I went back. And then came here again.
If only I remembered it the first time. It would have been helpful.
Are there ants in Death City? Stna should be respected, drought city, don't anger them.
Hopefully my sisters stayed home as well.
Third Person:
It's as if she was falling into fire. The ants roam around her, biting her legs and crawling up her shorts, and as Adah fell to the ground screaming she knew they'd be inside of her, as well. It hurt from the inside, the biting of minuscule creatures in her mouth. But it hurt in another way as well. They'd left her behind -- she always imagined they would, but she had never imagined it this vividly. Her mother's face flashed across her mind, the panic-stricken woman who chose her youngest over her left behind mutilated half of two.
Just let me live -- I will fight to live
And she pulls herself off of the ground and drags herself farther, until she's no longer in Africa. She dragged herself straight into another world, it feels like. The death motifs are familiar, and memories she thought she never had are swimming in her mind. Minato, Fuuka, Squalo...the names come back to her, and even though the ants are still on her, even though she's still drowning in red bodies, Adah grins as she stumbles into the kishin chamber.
I fought my way into my otherworld.
She laughs and coughs as the ants in her throat burrow their way into her. And then she falls, letting the bites' poison take hold as she curls up on the ground and passes out.
[ NOTES ]
If possible, could I have Adah remember her time in Death City from previously? This would help a lot with potential CR for her, as she'd speak a lot more freely than before.
