My Dad who is self employed came to stay for a week once, the only time he had ever stayed long enough that it was not possible for me to simply take the time off. As he left he said "I hadn't realised before how very like being self employed being an academic is." He's been defending academics ever since.

God help me if the day comes that I have to go back into traditional employment. Wait -- back? What am I saying? I've never held a "traditional" job for more than three months at a time. Everything else has been academia or writing. I honestly would not know how to cope in a standard hierarchy, and I fear I would not cope well.
