For those not familiar with Petshop of Horrors...Count D is a highly mysterious dude who runs a petshop in L.A.'s Chinatown. He periodically claims that he's only managing the shop for the real Count D, his grandfather, who he says is traveling abroad.* D sells animals that tend to look like stunningly beautiful and elegantly dressed human beings ( Read more... )

The bunnies are the one pet from canon I dearly want to lift wholesale, because as;lfdjk. Evil gremlin bunnies. Someone will probably end up keeping them, too.

(I have never quite figured out what the deal is on the animal/human thing. I don't think canon is entirely consistant on it. Like, Leon never sees the animals as anything but animals, no matter how many strange comments Chris makes to him, but at least once, he hears their voices when he can't see them, and asks about it. I try not to think too hard about it.)

(I've always suspected it's a mental trick-- that some people can 'see' the animals as more than animals, and some can't. It's easy for Chris as a child, but he loses it as he 'grows up', and Leon can't do it because he's old.)

Hee, although he's not buying a pet, from what I recall of the manga and what you say here, I should mention ( ... )

D would probably have a pretty good sense of all that from meeting him yeah, and it won't bother him--D's relationship to humanity is complicated, but he doesn't seem to have a particularly strong sense of human justice. He approves of people who love and care for their pets; he disapproves of people who cruel or selfish or commit evil acts against animals; but he only does the pet mojo thing with people who come to him looking for something out of the ordinary, whether they know they're looking for it or not.

So he'll probably think Mello is an interesting exhibit of humanity, but he won't do anything to him unless Mello wants him to. And of course, he will love Habeas, because D loves all animals, including the ones that regard him as prey.

Er, I should amend that to say that he disapproves of people committing evil acts against each other--but he doesn't get up in arms over it, because he has a low opinion of humanity to start with. The welfare of human beings is simply very low on the list of his priorities.

Yeahhhhh. I'm glad you're playing that side of D-- I remember showing the anime to a friend once and a moment of 'realization' about how differently D thinks about humanity just hitting him. *g*

JUST IN CASE (AND I FAIL FOR NOT SEEING THIS POST UNTIL NOW chasing after your icons wut) - you said YYH was an old favorite so you probably toootally know all about it, but Puu is the physical manifestation of Yuusuke's soul, his alter-ego. So it IS an animal, but it's also Yuusuke. I'll leave the totally mixed impression Yuusuke makes up to you. |D

*loves all over D wut*

It's an old favorite, but I've forgotten a lot, and there's a lot I never got to. Thanks for the note!
