Sometimes when I tell people about working in a library they don't believe me that people will come up and ask "I'm looking for a book, I don't know the name or the author, but I think it was blue...". Well know I have historical Proof! (Just get to the part about catalogers, it's around three minutes in.)

My favorite library experience was going up to a librarian and saying, "I don't know the name or author of the book, but it had a picture of someone's foot on the cover" and having her know exactly what book I was talking about. (Maniac Magee. Great book.)

Woowhee!!! With films like that, no wonder so many of us cool people went into library work. And got back out again.
And that whole needing to love books and people thing? Loving books will do it. But you know that from growing up in the library. And anything you didn't know or learned from the film can be found in that nice little book I forget what it's called but it's about "this high" with the green cover. And if you can't find that just rewatch Party Girl and dress like Parker Posey.
Or take the long way around and go to library school.

Nice!

I used to work in a bookstore. It happens. It definitely happens.

I also enjoyed the ones who would come in and ask for "the book that was on the radio the other day." Yes, we monitor all radio broadcasts. They mention exactly one book per week.

If pressed for details about the book that was on the radio, they would usually say something incredibly specific and helpful, such as "it was about economics."
