Extraneous Sibilance (word nerd alert)

This is something that was really bothering me.  I started reading the Redwall books and have been enjoying them thoroughly, but there was a sentence in the original story "Redwall" that really threw me off...

"The last words Ragear ever heard on this earth were uttered in the adder's sibilant hiss."

The confusion is very understandable. Not only did I not know what sibilant meant, but that seems very repetitive.

Also, Colson's pretty damn good. Impressive stuff.
