Windows XP service pack 2 is essential.
get it now.

however, berore you install it, make sure all spyware has been removed from your pc, otherwise upon reboot of your pc, post sp2 installation, your machine will lock up and be hosed.  xp will need to be reinstalled.

I've heard so many bad things about SP2. I know it causes conflicts with several widely used programs... I'm just afraid to download it. How essential is it?

i haven't had any problems on my home pc.
the only problems i've had are at work. but even that problem was slight.

basicly the microsoft firewall has every port blocked by default which prevents the intrusion of worms/virues/browser hijackings or port scans.

if you try to launch a program that is being blocked the firewall, it will tell you and you can immediately open up the port.

it also prompts you to have automatic updates turned on by default and checks to see whether or not you have a virus scan client running.

it is a huge download though.

That service pack messed up my computer big time! It's fixed now but, man...what a headache. I'd like to bitch slap Bill Gates.
