Gentlemen, Start Your Litigating

I'm still reeling from this whole Issue 1 thing. I voted for Kerry (a dem) and Voinovich (a GOPer). I can understand and respect why someone would support a candidate that I didn't necessarily support. At times a new and growing passion for our political process may have caused some trouble but in the end rational thought has won out. But with ( Read more... )

I don't get to vote in Ohio, so I don't know what issue #1 was, I assume it was a referendum on gay rights? People are making it sound like an actual amendment was passed, I didn't think any state amended anything did it? I thought several states had referendums to see if the citizens would support an amendment? (I'm kinda confused here.)

Here is the exact wording of Issue 1. It is an amendment to the State of Ohio Constitution.

Be it Resolved by the People of the State of Ohio: That the Constitution of the State of Ohio be amended by adopting a section to be designated as Section 11 of Article XV thereof, to read as follows: Article XV Section 11.

Only a union between one man and one woman may be a marriage valid in or recognized by this state and its political subdivisions. This state and its political subdivisions shall not create or recognize a legal status for relationships of unmarried individuals that intends to approximate the design, qualities, significance or effect of marriage.

Ohio actually passed the amendment.

I actually wonder if people read through the whole amendment prior to casting their vote, especially with as much "support" on the negative-side by several political figures and organizations in Ohio. I know it said it needed a majority "yes" to pass, but again, I wonder how many people actually read it. In many cases, they reverse what the response typically is (ie - a majority "no" is needed to pass). There were a few miscellaneous things in my precincts ballot that were worded in the reverse.

oh I hate bullshit like that, no should always be no change, and abstention should always be a vote for the status quo (no).

Wow, I can't believe that this is being amended in. It may take a while but I have no doubt that the Supreme Court will eventually clean this mess up. (it will be a lot harder to amend the US Constitution.)
