Media update - Xander Cage, Split, Celebrating David Bowie, No Man's Land, Hidden Figures

It feels like ages since I've updated - I've been so lazy, and it's been so hot. Like, record-setting, power-grid-breaking hot. I didn't actually realise "catastrophic" fire danger warnings existed - it stopped at "extreme" when I was a kid. And we lost power for a few hours on Friday night (local fault, not load shedding) when it was still around ( Read more... )

Ooh, this is so interesting-thank you for sharing your thoughts! And I keep forgetting Australia is hot right now! It’s freezing in the northern hemisphere, lol! I’m trying to see every Oscar-nominated Best Picture right now and am particularly looking forward to Hidden Figures, so I’m glad you liked it. :)

LOL, stay warm!

I'm glad Hidden Figures was nominated for an Oscar - despite the importance of its subject matter I'm sure some people will find it too 'slight' to win the award. But then sometimes any excuse will do. Speaking of slight, I'd be interested to hear what you think of La La Land...

Ha, I just saw La La Land last night! Have you seen it?

I would say I was seriously underwhelmed by it. Although it was filmed very prettily, I wasn't impressed with the script or the acting (none of the characters/situations/dialogue felt like they could be real or relatable in any way). I wouldn't even call it a musical really, which was what I had been looking forward to, because the lead characters don't (or can't?) really sing. And I didn't see a deep and meaningful commentary on the human condition either, which is usually what I would expect of Best Picture nominees.

If it wins Best Picture, then it will be clear that the Oscar will always just go to any movie that celebrates movies, no matter how worthy the competition is.

Have you seen it?

Yes! I was... not terribly impressed, to say the least *g*

It's just interesting that it's received so many rave reviews, whereas I haven't yet found one person I know (online or otherwise) who thought it was that brilliant. Maybe they're just too scared to mention it to me ;)

Ah, so I wasn't the only one to doze intermittently through No Man's Land! I would love to see those two greats act together again... in some other play...

And everyone I know who has seen Hidden Figures loved it. I really want to see it... unfortunately it will probably come to my theatre next month while I'm in London :P.

I heard they did Waiting for Godot, which I think would have been much more enjoyable. And... I tend to doze off during a great many things, even when I'm enjoying them *g*

Well, you could always see it in London! :P

I'm pleased you enjoyed Hidden Figures - it's (finally) about to open in the UK and I've seen several weeks of US-based friends (including space people) raving about it. It's a long time since I went to the cinema (The Simpsons Movie, if we're not including IMAX-at-the-museum stuff) so I hope I get to see this.

I actually thought of you when I was typing about how it being about NASA and the space race appealed to me. I imagine you'd enjoy it very much :)

Forty degrees! I could have used those a week ago when my toes and fingers felt like they were about to freeze off while cycling to work and back ( ... )

I could have used those a week agoOh no, you bloody well couldn't. 35+ degrees for over a week, and no air-conditioning. It's not like the outback areas where it's bone dry and almost bearable, Sydney is much more humid. Ugh. I tolerate cold much better, although I'm not overfond of it either. Roll on autumn ( ... )
