There's a theory out there that I learned about in my Social Pscyh class called Terror Management Theory. It says that as animals and living beings, we want to inherently perpetuate life, but as humans we have the cognition to know we will die someday, and we fear it. The theory then, says that we create culture in order to combat that fear--our culture lets us find some form of immortality: eternal life, leaving a legacy behind, reincarnation, etc.
Related to that theory is the concept of mortality salience. When we're reminded that we will die, that death is around us and inevitable, we react in such a way that we cling to our culture, our in group, and we reject the thought.
...I don't really have a point. I just wanted to say your views are also empirical.
