Tin Man

Dec 22, 2007 22:05

A picspam post for Tin Man, SciFi Channel's reimagining of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. I'm an Oz fangirl, what can you do? Besides, it's been a while since I've done one of these.

This is the heroine, DG. No, that does not stand for anything, she really is named just "DG". When the story starts, she's living on a farm in Kansas, where she draws pictures, helps her father deal with the machinery, rides her bike, and has really weird dreams.

Oh, and she works as a waitress in a diner. The pinafore had to make a cameo appearance, right?

Elsewhere, in the Outer Zone (read: OZ), the sorceress Azkadellia is searching for an Emerald (with a capital E). Besides horrendous fashion sense, Azkadellia is about as scary as a wet blanket. She does try so very hard, but keeps mistaking "bland" for "menacing". Her minions, the Longcoats, cower whenever she's around, but they're probably paid to do so. She learns that a "light" will come to save the day, and bla bla bla, convoluted excuse to bring DG to OZ.

Which she does, the usual way.

DG wakes up, confused. There's no house-landing or falling-on-the-wicked-witch, because there's only one wicked witch in this show, and it would be anti-climatic if she dies within the first twenty minutes. So instead, DG lands directly on OZ soil. Don't ask about the slippers, that will be dealt with much later. (omg spoilers)

There are munchkins! These ones aren't so friendly.

But because of them, DG meets her first ally, Glitch (read: Scarecrow), played by the always very lovely Alan Cumming. Glitch's brain was removed, so he has no memories of who he is or what he's doing there. (THIS WILL BE IMPORTANT.) They bond, and escape.

On the way to Central City (read: Emerald City), they encounter this metal suit, which contains...

A silver-skinned neanderthal! Who has been shut in that suit for years (no no, don't ask questions about wacky biological needs) and been forced to watch his wife and son be tortured and killed over and over via hologram. It's all very emo.

But the silver neanderthal cleans up pretty nicely to end up looking like Neal McDonough, but here his name is Cain, and he's a former cop. By the way, the OZ slang for cop is "Tin Man", so there's two layers to the name symbolism, yay!

Then they meet Raw (read: Cowardly Lion), a clairvoyant furry-man, who was tortured by Azkadellia and escaped. Now their team is complete, with a now 50% ratio of emo.

Elsewhere, Azkadellia learns that DG is in the OZ, and isn't happy. So she goes and...

...consults this mysterious lady whom is only known as Lavender Eyes. Lavender Eyes is being held captive, and Azkadellia tries to be mean by taunting her with DG's arrival. Lavender Eyes, however, is very happy that DG is in the OZ. (THIS WILL BE IMPORTANT.) Azkadellia's metal shoulder thingees are scarier than the person actually wearing them.

The gang are on the Old Road, being watched by Azkadellia's monkey-bat minions. Along the way, DG starts to get the weirdest feeling of deja vu, like she's been here before, but that can't be right... Right?

++MAJOR SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT ON++

She does find her parents soon enough, but they turn out to be robots. DG doesn't seem to be bothered much by this traumatic reveal, and turns her focus to finding her real mother. I wonder who that could be. (THIS WILL BE IMPORTANT.) The robot former-parents send DG to Central City to meet the Mystic Man, who knows something about her real mother.

Did I mention there are robots? Lookit mah made-for-tv awesome CGI!

Poor Azkadellia's still trying to look threatening. Fierce, darling! Fierce!

Anyway, DG and her minions friends arrive at Central City, which is totally not green but very massive and stuff. They manage to sneak in...

...and find the Mystic Man. He sure puts on a great show, but as people know...

...he turns out to be nothing more than a sad old man. Hi, Richard Dreyfuss! He's also high on vapours. DG threatens to throttle him a few times, and after seeing a v. special tattoo on DG's hand, remembers a message from DG's mother. Said message is the instruction for another road-trip (but they just got there!) up North.

The only place North is the Northern Island, palace of the deposed Queen of OZ. COULD THIS BE IMPORTANT?

FLASHBACK TIME! Lavender Eyes is the former Queen of Oz, and DG is her daughter. DG is a princess, yippee! (Don't ask if Lavender Eyes is supposed to be either/both of the Good Witches, or Ozma. It's not an issue.)

But alas! Azkadellia is DG's wicked older sister! Here, Wee!Azkadellia killed Wee!DG by dark magic. But Lavender Eyes revived DG with what remained of her own light magic and sent her to live in Kansas, where she would stay with the programmed robot parents until she's ready to face Azkadellia.

In the present, the sisters are reunited. Azkadellia wants the Emerald, but DG hasn't a clue where it is, so DG runs. There's a fight, during which...

...Azkadellia reveals her secret weapon...

...which are the magic monkeys in her boobs. Seriously. The monkey-bats fly out of her cleavage, I couldn't make this up. DG and Raw are captured, but Cain and Glitch are left for dead. In a side plot, Cain learns that his wife and kid are alive, but it's, you know, a side plot.

There's a dream sequence where the pinafore makes a second appearance. But it's just an attempt by Azkadellia to find the location of the Emerald, but DG has no idea where it is, seriously. The only clue Azkadellia can get is that the Emerald is being protected by "The Grey Gale". (THIS IS V. V. IMPORTANT.)

So Azkadellia tries asking nicely. DG just boggles. "You tried to KILL me." (THIS WILL BE IMPORTANT!) But DG at least learns that Azkadellia killed her because there's a prophecy where only one of the Queen's daughters will be able to rule the OZ.

Back at the Northern Island, Glitch ATEN'T DEAD. He searches round, and turns out...

...Cain ATEN'T DEAD either.

They have a moment, and Cain says thank you to Glitch for saving his life.

Aaaaaaand a slash pairing is born.

Back at Azkadellia's castle, Raw's friend/relative/whatever dies. This is just so we're reminded that he's also an emo woobie.

Placed in a nearby cell, DG gets to talk to the Mystic Man. He gives her road-trip instructions again, but this time to head South, to find the Emerald itself. It's all just an elaborate plan to get DG to get a bit of exercise, or something.

Elsewhere, there is slashyness as Glitch and Cain ponder how to rescue DG from Azkadellia's fortress.

What? Slashyness makes everything better.

There is also a completely random fight sequence in which Glitch shows off his kung fu. Don't worry, it's never mentioned or used again throughout the rest of the show. ETA: My bad, it is used once more, if you count the single spinning-kick he makes in the final battle.

Cain is suitably impressed. That, or he's mentally going, "Humina humina."

As for DG, she manages to escape thanks to a little dog. Hi, doggy!

By utterly random Hollywood-style odds, the gang are reunited. Glitch is upset that Raw hit him on the head with a wrench. Raw's probably upset that he's the only one who's not wearing leather now.

The gang are lead to freedom by the dog, who turns out to be a shapeshifter named Tutor, who was DG's teacher yonks ago. Wee!DG used to call him (would you have thunk it) Toto.

The trio are solemn as...

...DG has another flashback. To be fair, Zooey (the actress) is really good at thoughtful and far-away looks. She has to do so many because DG has a million flashbacks and a billion wait-a-minute pauses, so it has to be believable every single time.

Wee!DG learning to use her telekinesis powers. But she can't quite get it to work, until...

Wee!Azkadellia helps her. DG: "WTF? My sister was nice?" (THIS WILL BE IMPORTANT!)

The gang head South as instructed, but Toto leaves behind markers for Azkadellia. He's a spy! Bad Toto, no biscuit!

Continuation!
