Just to the right of the name of the nano is a disconnect button with an up arrow. (Or you can click the disconnect button on the iTunes screen to the on the lower right. It should be the far right buton on the bottom) You click on that. You might want to change the name of the nano too. To do that just double click on the nano name and type in the new name you want. Voila

After you click the up arrow, the nano may still say do not connect. It'll be ok as long as everything's been updated. If the computer says it's ok to disconnect it, disconnect it. It shouldn't cause any problems.
that was what happened. The computer told me it was okay but the Nano was telling me it wasn't. I finally got daring and unplugged it anyway. It all came out fine. I have to sit in the Dr. for at least a couple hours today. Now I have some Country music to listen to
My two cents along with the other recommendations. I use a Mac, so this may not apply to you but for some damn odd reason, if I plug in the iPod while I've got the iSight video camera plugged in, the iPod will NOT disconnect. I suspect that some add-on peripherals (like cameras) may muck with the iPod's synching process. Couple of times I've had to restart the computer and quickly disconnect the iPod while the system rebooted (NOT a safe or recommended move, btw).
