Passed on from a friend: like that meme where you check off a bunch of movies you've seen from a list. This one, however, isn't all boring American blockbusters post-1970, because it's the user-selected IMDB Top 250.

oh, i think i was probably being lazy with the language there. i don't either, and there are some blockbusters i love. but what i meant to say is that i find it boring to be asked whether you've seen something that doesn't actually tell someone very much about you--how often does one learn something significant about the personality and tastes of a fan of classical music by asking them about their Beethoven and Mozart collections? i mean, even this list is less useful than what I'd consider ideal in that regard--a list of various examples of cult cinema (defined widely: at this point, "old movies" constitute their own cult, or couple of cults, as do a couple of kinds and eras of non-American films, even as do the 5 or 6 kinds of mainstream movie people call "classic". of course we'd also add in the sorts of trash and indie films that are associated with the term as well.) that way, it would not be so much a "how much can I succeed in familiarity with this one canon?" measure as a study of where you've been exploring with your taste ( ... )
