when i was quite young my life was arranged into discreet imaginary worlds with little or no overlap. eating and sleeping, if i thought about them at all, were mostly ends to support--or maybe just distractions from--my creation of these worlds. eventually i would tire of one or two of these universes, and another would rise as if out of nowhere ( Read more... )

Ever thought about writing a novel that took place in one of these universes? Sounds like some of the elements easily come to you.

i have, actually. when i was young i tried to write stories set in them. now, however, i find most of the worlds (especially the names of them) vaguely embarassing. but i learned early on that while the construction of random facts and even epic histories came naturally--almost automatically--to me, the construction of a narrative remains somehow extremely difficult to me.
