This is what happens when my meeting gets rescheduled...

Well, we were supposed to have a big meeting at 3 today and we're not.  Good. Now I can do the post I've been thinking about all day.

See, this morning I got side-tracked by that Scientology protest from over the weekend, and started reading up on the "why".  That poster in the pic that almost everyone is posting that says, "Why are they dead?" ( Read more... )

If you'll pardon the expression, "Amen" comes to mind.

Followed closely, of course, by a resounding "Fuck yes."

Maybe we won't have to, they seem to be doing a pretty good job of killing themselves off.

They are a cult after all, they might just decide to do the kool-aid thing. :D

Religion is just another way to polarize "us" and "them".

Humans are wired to feel no compassion for "them" - other tribes are competition for food and resources, and therefore must be eliminated or driven off.

So, if you can make a group sound alien or foriegn, people have no problem cheating or killing them. Religion is a good way to do it, just like race.

That's what I'm getting at. Absolute belief begets absolute violence.

There's this big disconnect where being willing to die for your belief seems to be equated with being willing to kill for it. The odd part about that is that this is contrary to the core beliefs of every religion I've studied in detail. Even in Islam, it's only morally acceptable to use violence in defense of you and yours. It's the (corrupt) religious leaders that turn it into something else.

Great post.

This is why Germany sorta outlawed Scientology as a religion. From http://home.snafu.de/tilman/krasel/germany/: "The German Federal Government maintains that Scientology is an organization which has primarily economical interests...After having reviewed several Scientology books, the judges concluded that Scientology is not a religion, but a commercial enterprise."

Of course, the Co$ is claiming persecution and has actually won at least one case of discrimination against a member by a local German government entity. What you've written about them is frightening.

So is Tom Cruise jumping up and down on Oprah's sofa and John Travolta in drag. :P
