BSA

Okay.  I know I've touched on this in conversations, but I've never really sat down to write about it.  Or if I have, they've ended up as forgotten notes off in the corner someplace that I'm not remembering right now.  Well, good ole Governor Rick Perry has reminded me of the issue this morning by writing a book that supports something I'm dead-set ( Read more... )

thank you for finally making this post. there's not much to be said about a group that doesn't really practice what they preach, especially one that (even subtly) teaches children that intolerance is okay. but you do make the point that the bsa is not all evil; they just need to work on a few things before they get it almost right.

Heh. I guess I had said I wanted to do this quite a while ago. Yay for procrastination. ;)

But you're right. As convoluted as it is, it's about hypocrisy not about the core values that they are trying to teach.

And I know I've left out the whole "homosexuals are child molesters" issue. If people were more tolerant, everyone would know how patently false such assumptions are. Plus, it's just an illogical assumption: Some A's are B does not mean that all B's are A.

well said, very well said.

I know I have a more extreme view of Christianity, and would have used words like cancer of society, closeminded death-cult, stuff like that. I'm glad to see such a rational discussion of why you don't agree with them and what they're doing.

"The Church" is a scourge on humanity. People who actually believe in the teachings of Christ are not.

I was just talking with M about the BSA. Not that it's an issue for us, with two girls.

We're planning on checking out the Camp Fire stuff next month when they host Community Night at the Children's Museum here. I like that they make a positive statement about tolerance right off the bat, and encourage service and self-reliance. :)

If you look at Girl Scouts, I can tell you that, while they may teach good values (we never heard anything either way about sexuality, but then my mom was our troop leader, and sex Is Not Discussed with her, so *shrug*), their badges are worth crap now. Assuming, of course, that that means anything to you. Heh. :)

This rant brought to you by a mildly annoyed lifetime Scout who actually had to earn her badges.
