I already knew this, but here's an article that gives the actual statistics.

My first thought upon reading that article was, is *anybody* running for President addressing inmate populations and how to reintroduce them into general society?

I don't think anyone in government actually sees it as a problem (at least not at the federal level). After all, they broke the law.

I think there are a lot of people in prison who NEVER should have been put there. Prison as it exists in the US is not "correctional" as it desperately wants to call itself, but "penal" as it is sometimes correctly named. Within that scope, I wholeheartedly support efforts to reduce the prison population.

Petty/Civil criminals should not be in the same place as murderers, rapists, and child molesters. They should not receive the same nature, kind, or duration in their punishments. There are many justice systems that handle these sorts of things much better, and on this continent, as well.

These are the inmates I was referring to, the ones who can and should leave prison.

I don't have a useful idea on how to humanely (relatively speaking) deal with the maximum security inmates. I'm not sure they should be reintroduced into society, ever.
