It was 26 years ago this month....

I graduated 26 years ago this month from high school. There's a tradition of sending out graduation announcements, but my parents wouldn't allow my brother or I to take part in said tradition. Our parents felt that it was only a way of begging (much akin to trick or treating). That, was for poor people and for improper people with no manners/class ( Read more... )

Ya know, if you're proud of your niece for actually finishing high school despite all the difficulties, send her a congratulatory graduation card. It absolutely won't hurt you and will probably mean a lot to her. If you don't respond to it as a request for money, then it isn't one.

Just my pair o' pennies....

I was at work when I posted, I got home and Rich was like wtf??? Your parents didn't let you send out graduation announcements? We talked about that and then about my neice (and I forgot to mention that she had enclosed her senior picture)and rich said something about she doesn't look anything like he had expected (Becky from Glee). Anyhow, after talking about it we came up with what you said, only we are both going to sign the card. We don't care what her holy roller god fearin' momma says :) Thanx for the advice though *hugz* And BTW...I was at home when Putzie stopped by the store and rich was texting me asking me where his books were...They were right where I had told him to look but he didn't look there. So I set it right today for Putzie :)

great idea, sending a card and both of you signing it. two birds with one stone totally... niece gets the woo-hoo feeling hearing from her uncle and also a bit of tweakness to the mom LOL

Well, if it adds any camaraderie, graduation from my HS was nothing to celebrate. It was a backward school, I had to fight to get the classes I wanted, and it was sorta a mutual parting of the ways.

I didn't get my pix in the HS annual because they required you to wear a suit, and anyway we were so dirt poor, what was there to celebrate?

So I think my mom attended. Dad was gone.

(Not looking for sympathy here, but you know? I don't have one close friend who had a happy childhood)

*HUGS*

It's just something I hadn't thought about in forever. My parents raised us very very different from the rest of the known world (as I knew it anyhow). My mother grew up the eldest girl of 9 kids, having to pretty much raise 4 of her younger siblings. No indoor plumbing, newspaper on the walls for insulation, using the flour bags to get fabric to sew her own dresses, that kind of thing. So when it came to trick or treating and then graduation announcements, it was just a big N.O! to my parents. That was asking for a handout and you never ever do that ( ... )
