Warp Speed Will Kill YouCaptain Kirk might want to avoid taking the starship Enterprise to warp speed, unless he's ready to shrug off interstellar hydrogen atoms that would deliver a lethal radiation blast to both ship and crew

Sadly, his premise is flawed from the beginning. Warp drive -- and the real life 'warp field' modeling and physics it's inspired -- involves the warping of space around a ship, not unlike the flow of air over the outside of an airplane wing. As far as the actual ship is concerned, it's barely moving -- but the bubble of space it's sitting in is pushed out beyond the speed of light.

Hydrogen atoms would flow around the warped space as a matter of course. They'd never even notices the disruption.

But that's not as much fun, I realize.
