I get around campus on my bike. We live in a house that's a few blocks away from campus proper, and the bike is the difference between a five minute bike ride to the science building and a fifteen to twenty minute walk depending on pedestrian traffic. I've been riding my bike on campus for the past five years without a single problem. Sure there ( Read more... )

I think "being hit by a bicycle" could excuse the first five minutes of class :/

I only had one traffic accident on my bicycle (was with a scooter), but so many close calls on pedestrians. Most don't seem to hear the bell coming at them. Do you have a bell? Not that it would help the music listeners.

I don't have a bell but I'm seriously considering it now. I've also considered getting an airhorn, that seems to be the only thing loud enough to get through some pedestrians' thick skulls.

Oy. Too bad you couldn't just run the bitch down.

I once witnessed a girl step out in front of a car on Hanna Avenue (the only city street that cuts across the U of I campus). The driver slammed on his brakes, avoided hitting her by about six feet, and got rear-ended at 25 mph in the process. And the stupid cunt didn't even look up--just kept on moseying across the street. I knew the girl... we can just say the behavior didn't surprise me in the least.

I broke my collarbone last year due to some imbecile like this, and still have trouble due to it. It is almost impossible to move out of the way once you've picked up momentum on your bike....

Agreed, and I was on my way home on one of the main arteries on campus (no stop signs or lights for several city blocks) so I was going pretty fast. I'd say I was up to 15-20 when I rammed into her. I'd just put on the speed and it was downhill with the wind behind me.
