resetting deadlines
So... I'm going to miss my deadline. Okay, it's a self-imposed one, but still. But it was intended to keep me from spending too much time doing research and plotting. I still don't want to do that, but the alternative is to not have done enough if I stick to the deadline.

I may end up having to extend my planning period for a few days, even a week. There's just so much to do...
I'm starting to work on the story arcs and the layout of the scenes, but part of the problem I'm having is that the changes I just made, which are for the better, are starting to come home to roost.- Ataias ceased to be the grandson of the last ( Read more... )

"Flight of the Gods" came back Friday and I sent it out again. It came back today and, sigh, I sent it back out. It'd be nice if it found a home... At least this last came back with a positive comment "strong tale, but the familiar mythology wasn't for us ( Read more... ) -
character fun
The boys from Kamloops came down this weekend, getting to the house around 8.30-ish, so it didn't leave much in the evening on Friday for writing. Same with Saturday (although I wasn't up quite so late), although they did spend the day up in Bellingham with Teresa. minor family emergency yesterday, so I didn't get anything productive done, so I'm a day later, a day closer to my self-imposed deadline of the end of the month. Or the start of the countdown for getting Pale Kings and Princes written, I could say.

magic and other stuff
Had a relatively productive day yesterday, which is nice, but hard to gauge when you're working on plotting and brainstorming. A good day can consist of a lot of ideas flowing, or a single problem idea worked out. In this case it was mostly the former.

Pale Kings and Princes
Started reading Vanished Kingdoms by Norman Davies last night -- really shouldn't have because it's a birthday present and I opened it a little early. It's making me think a bit about one of the locations in the novel, and the origins/early story of one of the characters. Because the WIP takes place in the shadow of an empire that's fallen apart, I've been thinking about that quite a bit. (an aside: I may just have come up with a name for the first book, at least in the interim: Shadow of Empire).

Eldest son's birthday
Spent most of yesterday on the eldest son's 14th birthday. My wife (Teresa) made him a red velvet cake from scratch, per his request, for his birthday cake. Saying "from scratch) when referring to red velvet cakes is kind of misleading, in our case. T is from the south and knows what a real red velvet cake is supposed to taste like.
