To many people, I don't exist.  It's okay, I'm used to it.  But sometimes I wonder if the list is ever going to get long enough that I'll disappear completely.  Like that scene in Back to the Future, where Marty is about to fade away because his parents haven't met, I wonder if someday enough people will declare that I don't exist to cause me to ( Read more... )

do not exist as a bisexual woman. Now that I am engaged to a man, I'm declared heterosexual.

OMG do I understand you on that. Not that I was ever "out" to my family nor do I ever plan on being "out" with my immediate family. My husband and sister and a few R.L. friends know. Why? because I happen to be related to a bunch of neo conservative republican idiots who would say shit like "oh you weren't REALLY" oh really? just because I"m married does not make Helena Bonam Carter LESS gorgeous to me, just like Hugh Jackman is less gorgeous to my husband. (we have a deal, if he were to appear naked in our house, the first one to get to him gets to do whatever s/he wants with him) and that pisses me off, someone said of my husband (who is out to his friends but not my family) when we got married "congrats! now you're not BI!!" I could have punched them. I'm sure his mother thinks that too. "Oh thank G-d! a woman to set my wayward homosexual son 'straight"" NO. I still buy him Play boy and Play girl!

Hee. Looks like a lot of young feminists took that pole and virtually skewered Dickerson with it: http://motherjones.com/blue-marble/2009/03/young-feminist-does-not-equal-pole-dancer

I know you exist. I remember the young women and men in the March for Women's Lives, and have stood in the clinic parking lot with young feminists, wearing orange vests. (Oy. Never argue politics with a Poli Sci freshman. The urge to hit with a brick and the urge to pat on the head and say "come back when you've had a taste of real life" were mutually overwhelming.)

You cannot fade. You MUST not fade, for it is your generation that doesn't remember when there weren't any clinics, when women were told to choose husband or career. And those who forget history will be condemned to repeat it - look at the anti-abortion laws.

I have always hated stereotypes. I don't like anyone but me categorizing myself. The most important thing is that my husband accepts me as who I am and society can go screw itself. Despite being Catholic, David did rituals with me (I haven't done any in a while). We discuss what girls we think cute and he listens to the guys that I think cute (being hetero he doesn't care). We argue over politics since he's a neo-con and I'm a libertarian although we agree on fiscal conservatism so we don't strangle with each other.

As a middle aged feminist, I don't care what a young feminist does beyond standing up for herself and enjoying her life. I will not oppose the right to choose although I disagree with it on a moral level (I only support it because in the end it is a woman's body and that is the only reason).

I believe in you for what it is worth. :)
