Oh nuuu, I don't know how to make avatars :( Mr iain made this lovely Spike one but it's long overdue I'm afraid and I can't figure out how to shrink my images on Paint without a) cropping b) stretching/skewing or c) destroying them altogether. I always have such great ideas but I can't get them small enough. Oh someone please tell me how they make

Right, you open up the picture into Paint. Use the arrows on the perimeter of the picture to crop it (or alternatively use the cropping tools on the top left side.) For lj icons you need the pixel size to be 100x100. Go to 'Image' - 'Attributes' (this tells you the pixel size.) If you need to shrink the picture, go to Image - Sketch/Skew. You need to adjust the percentage in accordance to the 'attributes' pixel number. Eg, say the total pixel size is 200x200, you'd enter 50%x50% into the sketch/skew boxes, altering it accordingly until your image is 100x100.
If you have text to add do it now. Save as jpeg, cause lj won't accept bmp files.
