Going back in time: I would go back in time to see my mistake and learn what I would do different from or what could have been done different to change the course of events. I would use this information to examine the current situation and make adjustments as needed.
Going forward in time: I would use this to see the outcomes of choices that are being made. Then from the present I would change events or choices to effect the future. I could then use the forward to see if anything had changed. Almost like reading a "Choose your own Adventure book" where you hold your spot and read ahead to see the outcome, and if you don't like it you choose another path.
