Furlough-Week 1 -or- why "May your life be interesting" is a curse

So I'm on furlough from Cessna for three weeks. I really shouldn't complain, because there are many, many people who got it worse from Cessna, but it's still weird not only not going to work, but being legally unable to go to work or even call to see what's going on.

So the first thing that went wrong is that Roni had what we'll call a setback in her Special Ed master's program. This actually happened the Wednesday before the furlough started but the fallout has been occuring since. Those that have access to her facebook notes already know the story and I really don't need to go into it here, but the long and the short of it is that her department at Heights loves her and has rallied around her to get her through the program. Because she rocks. Still, it's the reason I'm here with her at the B&N, helping her work on a paper for her class.

The first thing that almost went wrong but is apparently going right is that State Farm called to tell me how much they were cutting the second check for my roof damage, and it was $2000 less than I expected. Then they called back and told me it was going to be $3000 MORE than expected, or $5000 more than the last figure. I called them back to make sure. They assured me it was right. I called them again. Same. I called my local agent and took the check and the documentation in to them. Apparently I win.

The next thing that went wrong is that, just as we were going to bed last night, Sadie threw up. No big deal, dogs throw up sometimes. Then she did it again. Then she had dry heaves. Then her stomach was absolutely taut with air. Then she threw up again. So, at 1:30 in the morning, we took her to the emergency vet, figuring that my 10 year-old bassador girl was likely about to shuffle off this mortal coil. Fortunately, it wasn't twisted bowels, as was suspected, so after x-rays and a $185 bill, we went home and she proceeded to dump the excess methane in a controlled manner, while sleeping underneath our bed. Unpleasant, but comforting. She had a brief gassy relapse this morning, but has since purged and is apparently on the mend.

The next thing that went wrong is that I inadvertently upset spookshow1313, who is getting ready to undergo surgery to alleviate chronic back pain and is a bit worried about it. As she is one of my favorite internet persons ever, this upset me greatly.

The next thing that went wrong, although not in chronological order, is the Chiefs/Raiders game, and the subsequent reaming in the media from asshats Whitlock and Simmons. Folks, I've been waiting 20 years to be a Chiefs season ticket holder. I don't need pot-stirring jackasses telling me my team's brand-new GM and coach suck two weeks into my first season.

The next thing to go wrong is that I'm WAY overdue with the Madden 10 review, and this is because I hate it. It's an absolute insult to all Wii owners, and to all sports game enthusiasts as far as I'm concerned. Putting it side-by-side with the 360 and PS3 versions exposes it for the absolute joke that it is. I can only imagine the production meetings for this game, "Hey, this year, just to change things up, why don't we REMOVE gameplay and customization options from the game and replace them with chintzy mini-game-like knock-offs. And instead of refining the graphics to make them more realistic, let's make the players all cartoony, like in NFL Blitz, complete with a splash screen that could have been stolen from TV Sports Football for the Commodore Amiga." Alex, I'm so sorry, but I want to kill this game.
