Technically, the right way to show a less-than symbol is to type <
Just typing the symbol itself makes the browser think your typing HTML code so it hides that. Typing < gets you <. Putting a 3 after that will get you what you want.
word, i've noticed the same thing. and even though what shane said is correct, it's never happened on livejournal before, so something is def different and it's annoying. i've found that if you type at least two hearts, the first one usually shows up. <3 <3
