Chapter 2

“Kyuhyun!” Siwon shouted for the second time that night.

Other than a slight curve of his lips, Kyuhyun didn’t give any indication that he heard something. When the second shout came around, our room was invaded by three people: Ryeowook, Zhoumi, and Henry.

“What the freak was that?” Ryeowook nearly screamed as he staggered over to where Kyuhyun and I were sitting and sat beside me. Henry and Zhoumi opted to sit on Kyuhyun’s bed instead, preferring to keep out of Kyuhyun’s mess. They both look fatigued.

“I swear to God that I’m gonna kill you!” came Siwon’s muffled scream.

This time it was Hankyung who invaded our space. “Good one,” he praised Kyuhyun with a smile. “But if he asks, I scolded you a little, okay?”

So he was all right with Kyuhyun playing all those tricks? And I thought he was the mature one. I nudged Kyuhyun’s knee. “You should apologize to him.” Surprisingly, he agreed.

Finally, Siwon barged in, steam fuming out of his ears. “Saran wrap over the toilet so that the pee goes everywhere?!” There were a few snickers from the direction of Kyuhyun’s bed.

I stared at Kyuhyun in surprise, who had risen to his feet upon Siwon’s entrance. “Oh,” he sputtered. “Come on, it’s just -”

“I was barefoot!” Siwon roared as he grabbed the jokester by the collar. There were more snickers. No one attempted to stop them. We learned by now, particularly after the whipped cream incident, that those two should be left to their own devices.

“I’m sorry,” uttered Kyuhyun with a straight and serious face. Those must have been some powerful words because Siwon released his death grip on Kyuhyun and used his now free hands to rub his temples in frustration. Kyuhyun had not moved from his place.

“Time to sleep,” Hankyung commanded with a clap of his hands, releasing the tension in the room. Grudgingly, Ryeowook bade me a good night and left my room with Zhoumi and Henry walking behind him.

Kyuhyun took Siwon’s hand in his. “Let’s go Siwon. I’ll walk you back to your room.” Siwon silently nodded, allowing himself to be guided by the younger man. On their way out, Kyuhyun gave me another small smile, which I gladly reciprocated. Hankyung left as well, muttering something about urine all over the bathroom tiles.

For the two minutes that I was alone, I managed to clean up the empty watermelon bag that was ungraciously left in my guard, set the alarm clock to five, and get ready for bed. I crawled beneath the maroon covers and turned on my left side so that my back was to Kyuhyun’s bed and that I could see a sliver of the night sky between the closed curtains. Several breaths after my head hit the pillow, I heard Kyuhyun walk in and noted the characteristic click of a door locking. From what I could hear, Kyuhyun went into the bathroom, mostly likely to brush his teeth and whatnot.

Taking a deep breath, I closed my eyes but opened them when I felt my bed sag slightly. I turned around to face Kyuhyun, who had sat on the edge of my bed, his right hand resting lightly on my hip. The dim light from the lamp on the nightstand illuminated his features so that I could see only the left side of his face.

“Are you sure that you’re okay?” he asked again.

I nodded mutely. “Go to sleep Kyuhyun. You need your rest.”

He remained seated on my bed, but he turned slightly to the left, allowing more of his face to be lighted. “Don’t miss home so much.” Was I one of the books that he often read? Besides, he never showed much talent in empathy. “Sleep now,” he continued. “And dream well.”

With that, he went over to his bed and turned off the lamp.

“Kyuhyun,” I whispered through the dark. “You never wished for me to dream before.”

“You look like you needed good dreams,” he whispered back. I could barely see him since my eyes hadn’t adjusted to the darkness yet.

“Why?”

“We are nothing more than our dreams,” he explained. “So all we can do is sleep and dream.”

When I woke up to the ringing of the alarm, the moon had not yet took its leave yet the sky was already golden and rosy with the coming of the sun. Looking over at Kyuhyun, who was still lightly snoring, I decided to let him be for several more minutes. Instead, I took a quick shower and got dressed in , which took approximately fifteen minutes.

It was now time to wake up Kyuhyun, a task that somehow became an epic that chronicled epic failure. First, I gently shook his shoulders. “Wake up, sleepyhead,” I cooed. However, I only received at low grunt from him. Next, I opened the curtains all the way so that the sunlight could spill in, but there wasn’t enough of the sun to be seen at this ungodly hour. Even then, Kyuhyun only turned to face the wall. Exasperated, I sat on his bed and began slapping his shoulder. “Wake up,” I commanded, on the verge of whining.

He gave another grunt before his arms pulled me down into a tight hug. “Go back to sleep,” he murmured groggily into my hair. Admittedly, I was quite startled. He wasn’t the type to initiate physical contact like this; he was more of the keep-thy-hands-to-thyself kind of guy. But I think the fact that he was half-asleep made possible this fall from character.

So there I was, lying beside him with only a blanket separating us. “Kyuhyunnie,” I attempted one more. “Wake up.”

“Two more minutes,” he bargained, his eyes still closed and his arms still clamped around me.

“One.”

“One and a half.”

“Thirty seconds.”

He opened his eyes and pulled back a little. “That’s unfair,” he moaned. Laughing, I pulled him up and dragged him to the sink.

While he was getting ready, I decided to check up on the others, all of whom were already up and about. When I came back, Kyuhyun was already dressed in dark jeans and tan polo shirt and having breakfast consisting of a small red apple.

“So did you dream well last night?” he asked me as I picked up our room key from the nightstand.

“Yes, I did. Thank you.” I gave him a big smile, which he returned in kind.

“What about?” he asked as we strolled to Siwon and Hankyung’s room.

Of you. I didn’t think he would’ve appreciated that. “Of puppies and home,” I lied. But before I had a chance to ask him about his dreams, we arrived at Hankyung’s room.

Within the next several hours, all seven of us had dance practice and interviews to promote Super Junior M.

What do you like the most about China?

Is Chinese difficult?

Can you dance a little for us?

During an interview, I managed to steal a glance at Kyuhyun and noticed that his eyes were glazed over. He was never good at paying attention. Thankfully, there was only twenty minutes left.

And half an hour later, all seven of us walked out of the building where we had our interview. Outside, the sky was picture-perfect. The sun was shining brightly and the sky was a beautiful shade of blue, reminiscent of tropical island paradises. It wasn’t too hot and there was a slight breeze every now and then. Who knew China was capable of such weather? Nonetheless, there were particles of sand that seemed to be suspended in the air like puppets at a show.

I walked ahead with Siwon, past all of the fans, some of whom were cheering and some jeering. When I turned around, it was at the exact moment that someone threw a stone in Henry’s direction. In the movies, the stone would be going is slow motion and suspenseful music would be playing. But this wasn’t the movies. The stone flew too quick, like a bullet, and I was too far to do anything. Luckily for all of us, Kyuhyun was standing next to Henry and somehow managed to catch the shooting object.
